President's Day is generally regarded as the day to celebrate the birth of the two most famous presidents of the United States. The day is celebrated on the third Monday in February in honor of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.


Washington and Lincoln, who have held the helm of the country during America's most difficult times, have long been deeply revered by many. Monday is a holiday that is currently celebrated in honor of the birthdays and lives of all US presidents.President's Day is usually celebrated with open ceremonies throughout the country, including in Washington DC. Although most government offices are closed on this day, many businesses offer discounts around the day.

The history of President's Day dates back to the 180's. At the time, George Washington's birthday was celebrated for the first time as a national holiday. George Washington was the first president of the United States and was the head of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.At the time, Washington was regarded as one of the most important figures in American history. Events such as the birth centenary of Washington in 1832 and the commencement of construction of the Washington Monument in 1848 were celebrated nationally.


During the debate on the law, it was proposed that Washington's birthday be named President's Day, in honor of the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12). Although Lincoln's birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never declared a national holiday. After lengthy deliberations, Congress rejected the proposal to change the name of the day.


When the law was enacted in 1981, the day was generally known as President's Day. One reason, of course, is that many retailers use the same name to sell their products, and another reason is that the day is approaching Lincoln's birthday.
